I saw this link (http://linux.about.com/od/linux101/l/blnewbie5_1.htm) posted in another thread, so I went to have a look.

It tells us about the consoles you can get to by clicking Crtl+Alt+F1-6. It says press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get to the first GUI tty. Then it says you can configure more GUI ttys and then get to them with Ctrl+Alt+F7-12.

I've never heard of the extra GUI ttys at Ctrl+Alt+F7-12. How do I configure them for use?

switch users -> new session
They are not really ttys, so unless xorg is running in them you get a blank display.
p.s some systems don't have the 1st xorg set to ctrl+alt+f7 any more, but ctrl+alt+f8 will still be the shortcut to your 2nd login.
