Large(ish) files slow to react

Kubuntu 9.04 KDE4.2
Modern AMD driven PC, SATA 320GB HD

With video files of around 650Mb and larger Kubuntu is slow to react e.g. right-clicking on file to check properties etc means a wait of 30secs or more before the menu shows. Dragging files around can also be slow.

Any ideas gratefully accepted.

Is dolphin set to preview files? If so, disable it for a while and see how it goes. I have in my PC video files larger than 2GB and move them around with no problems (my VBox disk file is 10GB, for instance, though not a video file).

I think I once saw an option not to preview files larger than n size, but I wouldn't be able to check right now (make a quick check in dolphin's settings).
