Spri - Lightweight Ubuntu Derivative Release Candidate Now Available

I know there are a lot of lightweight Ubuntu based distros out there nowadays, however from what I've seen, they all have Openbox in common. (Masonux, Crunchbang and Lubuntu all use Openbox)

You may or may not know, I've been developing a lightweight Ubuntu distro that uses IceWm as its Window manager. I've just uploaded the release candidate and urge you to try it out so I can iron out any bugs before the final release!

Is Ubuntu especially forkable or something? It seems like there's a million of 'em, but I haven't heard of, say, too many Openbox Fedora forks.

I actually went with gnome-mplayer instead of VLC. It plays as many formats as I've added all the required codecs, although I'm still considering moving to VLC in future.

PROTIP: the "let me Google that for you" thing only works if the target is actually aware of the term to be Googled. As I've never heard of "remastersys", it would be quite difficult for me to have known to Google it.

I don't think it's especially forkable, it's just much more popular, thus more people who think to make distros. I haven't seen the actual numbers, but my guess is that there are probably at least twice as many Ubuntu users as Fedora, and another guess is that Ubuntu users tend to be more adventurous than Fedora users.

I completely disagree. Fedora is all about bleeding edge software… so I think the users are willing to possibly sacrifice stability to be able to use the latest technologies available. I think that makes them just as adventurous as Ubuntu users, if not more.

EDIT: Also, I don't think Fedora has a tool like remastersys (at least one that is as easy to use), so I think it does make Ubuntu/Debian more forkable. Ubuntu being more popular does factor into it being forked more though.

At the Atlanta Linux Fest, a Fedora representative spoke about spinning your own distribution with tools easily found in Fedora's repositories. I was unable to go to the lecture, but I know it's possible.

I am, but its pretty feature incomplete.

I initially added gmrun, but changed it for gexec because its only half a meg installed and has tab completion and other nifty features.
