want to format an old laptop

I've got a 5 year old 8 pound brick of a laptop that for a long time I'd put Ubuntu on. now that I have a new, smaller laptop, I was thinking of formatting the old one and giving to a computer recycle place. The battery is shot as is the Dvd drive, but I could at least get it recycled. But I'm not sure how to wipe it completely. can someone give me guidance? I've got 9.04 on there. thanks!
