Tryptamine

Hi, I'm very very new to ubuntu, I'm using Jaunty 9.04. I have two SLI'd 9800 GTX+. These two video cards are exactly the same supposidly, but look different (don't know if this matters) but the problem I am having; Upon installation of my video card drivers I reboot and then I get a black screen and it doesn't go pass "battery check..." from there I have to log in through the black screen. After logging in I can run commands, but have no desktop it's just one giant command prompt thing. I have tried a few things, I have installed it and then did "x-sli=off" or to that effect, nothing, I've also taken one video card out and installed the driver (worked even after reboot!) Then putting the other video card back in, it goes back to my original problem.
I'm ready to stop using windows but linux is bashing my face I've formatted nine times, any help would be much appreciated!
