Hi i am new to this forum,

My mouse is able to push the scroll button left and right.
So i used compiz to switch workspaces with this function of the mouse.
However i get the feeling that compiz is slowing down my laptop. ( its a netbook)
So i was wondering can i use this funtion without compiz?

Thanks in advance

It depends on your window manager. Compiz is fancy. Some are very, very plain. Most are in between. Look at your system settings menu under either "Window Behavior" or "Desktop" There might be some settings (depending on your window manager) to roll between virtual desktops.

Other window managers to look at might be

metacity
sawfish
ratpoison
openbox
twm
xfwm4
fvwm or fvwm-crystal

You can also keep compiz but turn off the parts that you don't want. That will speed things up.

thank you for your reply. I also use linux because people always want to help and give a fast reply.
However i am using ubuntu 9.04 and i believe its metacity.
Maybe i have to configure a text file? I mean there must be a config file somewhere right?
Can you advice a faster windowmanager?

All the ones I mentioned should be faster than compiz.

Most should allow editing via the settings menu. FVWM, you'll have to edit a text file, but there is plenty of reference material on the web to go step by step.

Try a few. You can have many installed and you can switch between them. If you can run FVWM and then FVWM-crystal you can see how far customization can be taken and set some goals for yourself.
