no matter what I select the mic doesn't work in jaunty

I have read loads of threads, tried every setting and still can't get the mic to work in jaunty. I had it working even in skype when running Intrepid.

Please, does anyone else have this problem?

Go here http://www.compuhowto.com/linux/ubuntu/ubuntu-no-sound/ and check this article on no sound working in ubuntu and when you load the alsamixer at the terminal look for the mic setting and make sure it is enabled and not muted.
