I know linux can't get viruses, but I want a firewall just in case. Plus, I am going to be sharing files with window programs(text, mp3, etc.) When I get my linux up and running (go here to help me out (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1269923)) I want a good free firewall. Not sure if that is possible, but I am hoping.

What about the one you already have ;)

It's called iptables and there is a frontend for it in synaptic but I forget the name, guarddog or something

+1 to the response about iptables.

How does having a firewall prevent viruses and other malware getting in? If anything, a properly setup firewall helps prevent intruders that come in through your network. It won't stop rubbish getting into your system through your browser or by email - that's not what its for.

EDIT: one recommended front-end for iptables is called UFW

Install "gufw" from the repos. It is a frontend for uncomplicated firewall (ufw).

Some modems have an inbuilt firewall, that's a good choice! Linksys has had some cheap ones, I'm actually using one of them myself (and please don't try to hack me! [-X).

in the terminal type sudo apt-get install gufw
