For your printer? Is there anything else you use. Would you trust an apple project?

the source is there for you to look (http://svn.easysw.com/public/cups/). i don't trust cups anymore than i trust the kernel.

Well, I never print at home and the printer I have doesn't work with Linux, so I don't use it. However, I do trust CUPS. It's fully open source; who cares what company is behind it?

Yeah. Plus realize that Apple did not write CUPS, they merely purchased it. :P

If it's under a Free Software license, I couldn't care less about the company of origin.

No. I do not trust CUPS.

Every time I print something, I watch that little basterd like a hawk.

See the link in my sig. Apple has made significant contributions to open source. Just because they haven't made their whole OS free software doesn't mean they haven't contributed a lot.

Look - I don't automagically trust everything open-source. I trust it if I :

(a) hear good things about it, and very little bad.
(b) am able to read the source code myself and understand what
it accomplishes.

If you have the time to read a whole program then you have way too much time on your hands.

OP, I don't ever have to print anything and I really couldn't care about CUPS. It's printing, we've had the on lock for a while. But this is good:

I am soooooooooooooooooooo way the aich ee double-hockey-stick sick and tired of the Apple bashing on this message board.

You bunch of clowns really just don't get it, do you?

Apple is a partner and contributor in open source. Yet no matter what they do, it's never enough, or it's all a part of some dark and ominous eeeeeevil master plan to ensnare and destroy the world.

You lot need to get over yourselves already, go outside, and do something useful with your lives.

@MikeTheC:

People need to hate on something, no? If it's not taking part in a distro-war, it's hating on an OS developer that isn't linux. Or it's hating computer hardware manufacturers, or it's hating on religions, or food, or lifestyles.

Quite obviously, no? You're absolutely right.

It's sad that the message board of message boards which should be a beacon of freedom of opinions/worldviews/etc. should frequently turn into a den of vipers.

And not even Colonial Vipers at that.

Because, if it was a den of Colonial Vipers, it'd still be mean, but at least they'd be cool to watch.

This coming from a guy who has this in his signature:

world:~ mike$ rm -f /earth/united_states/washington/redmond/M$If you think that it is legitimate to bash Microsoft, but not Apple, simply because one kicks a bit of source code back to the FOSS community and the other doesn't (and even this, is debatable (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonlight_%28runtime%29)), then you are seriously mistaken. When you consider that Apple is the beneficiary of a lot more open source projects than Microsoft, it is only fitting that they give something back. As far as general business practices are concerned, Apple are no more ethical than Microsoft, and, if anything, are only too happy to engage in lock-in tactics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vendor_lock-in#Apple_Inc.), spreading misinformation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get_a_Mac#Criticism), and bullying (http://vadi-blog.com/2008/07/30/apple-tries-to-shut-down-el-tunes-viva-la-el-tunes/). Your uninformed ad hominem attacks don't change any of that, they just make you look like a hypocrite.

It's not about "hating", its about contesting the claim that Apple are allies of, or even a good thing for, Linux/FOSS; or that we should be unequivocally singing their praises because of CUPS, webkit, or what-have-you.

@MikeTheC and tcoffeep: This is silly, you are missing a lot of valid points people make about Apple and about Microsoft. It's not fair to just tarnish everyone with the same brush.

Sometimes you're right, and people can be too vicious, or pick pointless fights or pet hates of companies, but far from always.

The fact that Apple purchased CUPS can be a plus if they keep it open source under the GPL. But if they dont we will have to take the last version that is released under the GPL and branch off our own.
But being CUPS is just a printing system. It doesnt take much to maintain.
