I'm getting a "no media in device" error when i try to mount my usb flash drive

I believe it's formatted in fat or fat32
it's set-up to automatically load a tru-crypt directory on it
It does not show up in the fdisk listing
I'm running ubuntu 9.04

here's the output from dmseg

It works fine on my windows XP box

does this thumb drive, by chance, have any silly pre-installed software or anything else that shows up in Windows that does not show up on a generic thumb drive?

this could be another case of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U3#Criticisms

i'm looking here: http://www.sony.net/Products/Media/Microvault/products/usm-l/index.html#caution

Sony Micro Vault is formatted with an exclusive software to best perform the High-Speed USB's high transfer rate. If formatted using any other software, it is possible that the performance deteriorates or that a data error happens depending on the computers or on the OS. Should any of such conditions happen, it is highly recommended to download and format the device again using Sony Micro Vault Format Software’. (Be sure to backup your files before re-formatting)

You cannot use the Micro Vault with unsupported operating systems. Please check the OS compatibility chart.

Before Use

What PCs can I use?
You can use PCs that have Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows Me installed. Please apply the latest service packs.

In Disk Management under Windows what type of filesystem does it come up as out of interest?

What you can do is format it as FAT32 within Windows, and go back to the U3 system at any time with Sony's tool.
