I am the owner of this exact model of laptop.
http://www.linuxshoppen.dk/products.php?showvariant_id=6787
it is a x-one. and its reconfigured and I am sorry the page is only displayed in Danish but I cant find anywhere anything on google and when i tried just about all that comes up are my own threads about it.

I want to replace ubuntu and crunch bang on it but I found it to be difficult. belenix runs fine but misses the sounddriver and I cant fix it.

bsd wont even boot. 7.2 I tried but it halts in the middle of starting up.
same does opensolaris.

debian lenny wont find netcard and later in the process it start flickering on the screen.
same all other minimal install cd that uses the debian installer.

scientific linux has the same problem with missing soun driver and I do not like rmp based distros at all I suddenly remembered when I had scientific installed on it.

I am unhappy only being able to run ubuntu or crunch bang the laptop but it is very very important that the alternative is easy to install and it is stable as i will be unsing it most when i go to the hospital. in other words linux from scratch while in the hospital with kidney failure and needing to watch a movie or writing a important email is no good idea.

anyone have suggestions. I would actually love to run bsd on it but :(

thanks.

I suggest keep ubuntu.... with other linux you may have more problems (quite sure).
windows is an option (nooooooooooooo, just :P).
sorry, i know that it is not too much help

Well it came with windows vista. I have the cd still. But somehow I rather use something else and hope to get my money back for the vista license. had it been xp I still have lots of old cd with lots of software for windows. I used to use xp for recording audio. but not since ubuntu dapper drake. I lost track of how long that is ago . but I never touched windows since. and I wont if it cost me anything either.

I tried BSD on my Sony Vaio many times and the same thing, it wouldn't install. All I can suggest is you have a look through the Distrowatch (http://distrowatch.com/) website and see if anything catches your eye.

One distro I liked that I tried recently was Macpup Opera (http://macpup.org/).

Best of luck to you with the hospital thing.

i just tried Desktop BSD., it starts up fine but halts at SMP: #cpu1 activated.
it just hangs there. I would have hoped I could install that on the laptop,

Anyone with some BSD knowledge that could tell me what is going with that ?
I feel a bit limited to ubuntu and derivatives and for that matter ubuntu is nice but I been using it since dapper and I would like to have a choice of something else also.

thanks.

On certain finicky machines, I have had good luck with Mandriva or PCLinuxOS, as well as openSUSE. Those may be worth some consideration. Good luck.

I can safely exclude all BSD and the lbsd live systems. I can not get opensolaris booted proper and belenix has no sound when installed. and is not stable by the way. solaris 10 does not work either.

what i found that did work was scientific linux crunch bang linux and ubuntu . I have a live cd of a slackware variant gamers edition that works as live system but no sound .

so I figure I am going to find out what it is these systems i cant use on it does not like and then see if it is possible to replace the parts. i figure it mabe has to do with the videocard.
