View Full Version : Rolling Release Distro That's Easy To Setup and...

...has a wide variety of codecs like medibuntu, flashplugin-nonfree, wine PPA access, Inkscape, etc.

In lieu of this post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1268476), as I think this is what the user really wanted (I also want this too to be honest.)

If you give a distro, mind pointing to some guides or show how to install such codecs and flashplugin-nonfree, etc?

base Arch (spin-offs are fine) discussion will be reported here, as that should be left for the other thread.

What in the world does "easy to set-up" mean, to you?

Most rolling release distros involve a fair deal of CLI, in setup as well as running.

Yeah, mainly gui setup.

I was looking at KahelOS, but their sourceforge doesn't have any AMD64 ISOs, even though they boast x86-64 support.

4.2 doesn't have a miniEdition it seems.

I hate KahelOS coz of their BS tag "Do IT right." See this. (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=80006)

You mean sidux. Debian itself is not rolling release.

Debian Testing is...but there's the dreaded CLI :)

The "Do IT right" is kinda stupid, but is Kahel like Chakra with Gnome? I'll sure try it.

Oh yes sidux deserves a mention, the bloody thing installs debian sid in just 5 minutes. :o That's the fastest linux setup I've seen.

I wouldn't know. It's basically Arch+GUI setup+fancy artworks+preconfigured Desktop from what I read.

Doesn't get any easier than PCLinuxOS which comes with all codecs installed ready to go.

*sigh*

PCLinuxOS Gnome 2008, a remastered, community edition of PCLinuxOS featuring the GNOME 2.24.2 desktop was released on March 21, 2008, and is currently hosted at linuxgator.org though it is not supported in the official irc channel.

:( I want GNOME though.

No x64 though.

Chakra. GUI installer of Arch+KDEMod.

Foresight (http://www.foresightlinux.org/). Haven't tried it, but you get rolling release + GNOME.

You asked for rolling release, that's what PCLinuxOS is.
You didn't say that you wanted Gnome, it has Gnome, but you're :( about Gnome?

Maybe you should forget about the rolling release thing which is a total non-feature anyway.

Chakra. GUI installer of Arch+KDEMod.

I've said it before, but it bears repeating. Running Arch without actually doing the Arch install is a recipe for Frustrated-Annoyed-In-Over-There-Head-Pandas.

The Chakra guys are really doing bizzarro things to Arch. Last I heard they were developing an Auto-Update Tool...how dumb an idea can that possibly be on a rolling-release...?

No, I was :( about not having GNOME available in plain sight on their website. Looking like you have to install it extra.

I don't know about that. For those who are inpatient and don't like waiting completely arbitrary amounts of time (6 months, 8months etc) to get New Shiny Toys. It is a feature.

You = hilariously misguided

I can explain to you why rolling release is a great feature using two anecdotes:

1) Ever had a big problem after an OS upgrade and weren't sure exactly which element was causing the problem? I haven't.

2) I keep seeing threads about some version of Pidgin or OpenOffice or Firefox that aren't in the repos because the devs are waiting for the next version of Ubuntu before implementing it. Meanwhile I've been using it for a while now. Pidgin springs to mind.

I guess I'll have to, until canonical starts pushing in so many things I don't want to use *cough*Empathy*cough*Ekiga*cough*Evolution*cough*R emote Desktop Viewer*cough*vlc plugin*cough*rhythmbox*cough*Dictionary*cough cough*

and add *cough*Ubuntu Tweak*cough*

You can choose which DE you want to download and install.
The standard one is KDE, there's Gnome and also LXDE.

I hope those are hybrid installs, because I need x64. Not that it matters, since I'll probably end up staying with Ubuntu at this rate.

Don't be afraid of the CLI, if you are worried about things going wrong install Arch inside virtualbox and see if you can hanbdle the whole process. Write down important *must do* steps. Trust me you will feel great once its setup. ;)

1: No, neither do the vast majority of Ubuntu users.

2: Newer isn't necessarily better.
