What have you found is the best way to kill flies?

I have found offering a welcoming environment for spiders is the greatest way to kill flies. I watched our spider (Anastassia) capture a fly spin it in her web and then suck the life out of it.

Spiders Rock!

They are also great at eating mosquitoes!

I have arachnophobia! I rather just drop a few pennies in a ziplock bag with a small amount of water and hang them near doorways. I dont know how the heck this works and I laughed at the idea when I see it. but it works../confused..

EDIT: This DOESNT kill them, but this wards them off. Just as good.

The water alone works, you just need something to act as a weight in the water(anything would work, a stone or a coin is most common I guess), because of their huge number of eyes and how little each eye sees when they look at water in a plastic bag it's effectively like blinding them, so they change direction and fly away. It's simple biology.

RAID (flyspray) works best

BUt 2nd best is:

Moving your hand SLOWLY close to the fly and then hitting the last 3 inches as fast as possible.
This really works. The slowness is important, because fly:s eyes can't see slow motion

Like they did in the Beverly Hillbillies, with a small bore rifle & saltpeter. :)

Just shoot the varmints off the walls.

Also important is to approach the fly from behind, not because they can't see it, but because flies jump backwards to take off, giving you a slightly easier target(And attacking from above doesn't, flies can move to each side much faster than up or down).

you could use chop sticks also!

You can even practice online here (http://playbus.net/fly-chopstick/).

The flies I deal with are slow, so I just grab them and take them outside.

Moths and caterpillars are a more annoying problem.

awesome, i doubt where i live there are anything like those. i used to go down the stairs in the mornings to avoid the bits of spiders lying around coz he mostly just chewed on them, flies he ate fully, after catching them under his paw and looking surprised

I say take off and nuke them from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

(That was flies they were talking about... Right?)

hitting a fly from more that a direction also works.

Flies have reflexes much faster than our, but a small brain, that can't decide which hand to avoid

Me? 5 lb sledgehammer. A little hard on the walls and furnishings but amazingly effective.

Just kidding. I have cats. Don't have flying insects. Do have occasional collateral damage like the hammer technique.

I actively encourage these (http://i.pbase.com/v3/48/95248/1/48116303.GardenSpider5.jpg) to take up residence around the outside of the house however - decreases the local bug population quite a bit. Between the cats, the garden spiders and the praying mantis other pests rarely make it in to be seen. I don't remember when I last bought a can of bug spray.

Hairspray and a zippo lighter is a hillarious way to get rid of any flying bug. Fry their wings, then stomp them dead when they land. Since flamable liquid can bea bit hard on the interior, though, I'm usually just using the good old fly-swatter.

Darn it! You beat me to it. I was going to say that you could invite President Obama over for an interview, and he'll kill it for you.

Of course you'll have to deal with PETA complaining that you killed a helpless animal, but it's worth it. :D

Get many breezes through your house?

My way, I give the flies windows 95 and watch as they commit suicide.

Fly-swats are the most sporting and enjoyable but unfortunately the dog hates the sound and skulks off with tail between legs. It is so satisfying I do it anyway; there is plenty of opportunity in an Australian summer to perfect your technique!

I do like the bag of water idea though. Might give that a try. What about mosquitoes?
