alsa issue's

Hi, recently switched a dell inspiron 2200 to ubuntu jaunty from windows and so far everything working great ..... except the sound. No sound with original alsa install and no sound card recognised, although i can see the soundcard in the terminal hardware list. Have tried updating alsa to 1.0.21 but, while the lib and utils will update, every attemp to install a driver has failed. Does anyone know if this is alsa's way of telling me that it doesn't have a driver for my sound card or is there something i'm missing/something else worth trying?
