Hello Community,

My PC runs on UBUNTU 8.10.

I have seen programmes which interest me which I would like to download from sites such as SOFTONIC.COM. These are posted in the "LINUX" section of the portal. When I check their specifications and requirements, I see in many cases that the operating system required is :

a) X11, GTK, Console.......

I have never heard of those OSs. The ones I know are :

b) UBUNTU, DEBIAN, FEDORA, WINDOWS etc etc .......

Is there a relation between (a) and (b)? Can I successfully install these programmes?

Thanks

X11, GTK, Console

Those are not OS's.

X11 - Its basically the X window system being reffered there . In layman terms , the Graphical part of your OS.

GTK - its also related to the GUI ( Graphical User Interface ).Its a sort of library for creating graphical user interfaces

Console - There are basically 6 consoles which are invoked by the Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6] keys. Its basically similar to the terminal/command line where run the codes like " apt-get install " and all.But you stil are using terminal within the GUI when you select terminal from the Applications dropdown list.

As i believe , the requirement just mentions that you need a Desktop edition of the OS with GUI !

This is to the extend i know it. Please correct me if i am wrong.
