View Full Version : [ubuntu] My Home partition is not detected by Ubuntu

I resized and moved some partitions around the hard disk and now Ubuntu cannot find my home partition at boot.

My home partition is detected through gparted and blkid:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo blkid
/dev/loop0: TYPE="squashfs" (that's the live CD from which I'm trying to repair the system)
/dev/sda1: TYPE="swap" UUID="07f3a727-60f2-4c6e-b4ad-26acfe9e4ac3"
/dev/sda2: UUID="5E4C837D4C834EA9" LABEL="HP_PAVILION" TYPE="ntfs"
/dev/sda3: UUID="5dda0098-ca52-4cdb-8d22-3787dee8cd30" TYPE="ext4"
/dev/sda4: UUID="9ad998ca-a452-4d6c-b366-901360d9e3be" TYPE="ext4"

When I type sudo gedit /media/disk/etc/fstab from the liveCD, I can access my root partition:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'vol_id --uuid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# / was on /dev/sda3 during installation
UUID=5dda0098-ca52-4cdb-8d22-3787dee8cd30 / ext4 relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /home was on /dev/sda4 during installation
UUID=9ad998ca-a452-4d6c-b366-901360d9e3be /home ext4 relatime 0 2
/dev/scd1 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

As you see, the UUID match between blkid and fstab. However the liveCD is incapable of "seeing" my home partition when I go to Places... so I'm wondering if something is wrong with the actual format of my home partition. I checked it for errors through gparted, but nothing changed. And I can't mount it through gparted or through sudo mount -t /dev/sda4 either.

I need your help. Thanks in advance!

try to mount the partition:

sudo mount -t ext4 /dev/sda4 /mnt
and post the output from:

dmesg | tail -n 20

OK, here goes:

Everything looks fine. The partition should be mounted.

What's the output of:

mount
ls -al /mnt

and it contains your home directory.

Try to reboot and see if it's mounted.

If not, then switch to a virtual terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F2) login and post the output of:

mount

EDIT: Do you get any error message during the boot up?

the8thstar

Yes, I got a fail message regarding the virtual something in regard to my home partition (the UUID was listed, so that's how I knew).

Boot the live cd, mount the root ("/") partition under /media/disk and post the content of /media/disk/var/log/dmesg file.

(Or upload it as an attachment.)

blkid has a bug sometime its cache doesn't get updated.
try

sudo blkid -c /dev/null and compare again

an alternate is replace the UUID in /etc/fstab

# /home was on /dev/sda4 during installation
/dev/sda4 /home ext4 relatime 0 2
from the mount output.

/dev/sda4 on /mnt type ext4 (rw) Sometimes this will break things. Best not to mount a partition directly on /mnt - make a subdirectory like /mnt/zzz and mount the partition on the subdirectory.

Alright guys, I followed your directions and I was able to make Ubuntu work again! Thanks alot!

On a side note, I still need to solve my error 13 in Grub when I want to boot Windows XP. Yet another adventure!
