View Full Version : [ubuntu] Help installing graphics drivers please

I'm a little confused, so maybe somebody can help me.

I'm trying to upgrade the video drivers that came installed with Ubuntu v9.04. I'm REALLY new to Linux. I know exactly what kind of video card I've got, and downloaded the drivers for it, but it's some sort of .run file or something? How do I install this?

(It's an nVidia card by-the-by. I only want to install the drivers to get better screen resolution, and better graphical effects.)

Any offers?

try envy. From a terminal:

sudo apt-get install envyng-gtk

You will see Envy appear in your System Administration menu and you can install from there.

The easiest way to get drivers in Ubuntu is to go to System->Administration-> Hardware Drivers and enable the latest available for your computer from the repository. If you need a newer version of the graphics driver, it is a much more involved process. I think I have it figured out based off some googling but perhaps someone with more knowledge will chime in and provide a link to a good guide or create said guide.
