View Full Version : [ubuntu] Preserving a Software RAID setup over reinstallation

I guess this is not specifically an Ubuntu questions, but since the system is running Ubuntu, I figure it's as good a place as any to ask.

I have a home file server running a very old version of Ubuntu (3 years old at least). The machines has a software RAID-5 setup providing mass storage for the home network. Root is not on the RAID setup, but on a regular IDE drive.

I'd like to bring the server into 2009 with a fresh install of Ubuntu, i.e. wipe the root drive, and do a fresh install. Of course, I want the content of the RAID device to be maintained during this process.

How will the newly installed OS recognize the RAID device? How will it know which drive is which? Do I need to save a configuration file before I wipe the machine?...

Thanks
