Searchable Data?

Ok you web heads, i was wondering if there is a program, open source of course, that i could use to make a searchable database full of the hundreds of different filters that i sell at my store every day? I would liketo be able to design my own gui search box for searching equipment by model numbers. Is this a do able thing, or am i having a pipe dream?

MySQL and PHP (using PHPmyadmin) is a good starting point. Will be a little complicated if you don't know PHP though...

Otherwise, you can use OpenOffice's database system- Base.
