View Full Version : [ubuntu] Wireless not working

Hi everyone!

I'm dual booting XP and ubuntu and for some reason it won't connect to my wireless. It works on XP but not on ubuntu even though it shows the card in network manager.

I have WPA2 setup and I know the card supports it since it works on XP. Even when I try to connect in Ubuntu it only gives me the option of WPA/WPA2 and to enter the passphrase (auto-detect I guess?) either way, any ideas why it might not work?

I tried editing the network connections to put in an IP address manually and it won't let me save the configs I put in...

Hmm, not saving the settings? Something is not right here.

From the CLI (terminal) try editing the following:

sudo [vi / nano / gedit, whichever you prefer] /etc/network/interfaces

check what the settings are, edit as necessary.

Then;

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

(or alternately you could go the long route and do a sudo /etc/init.d/networking stop, sudo /etc/init.d/networking start)

after you're done check:

ifconfig -a

that should give you an output of the current settings. P.S. ifconfig may need to be run as sudo, I don't rightly remember off the top of my head.

It only has

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
What should I type for my wireless? wlan0? And despite not being listed, it still shows up in Net Manager...odd? Also, it lists my card as wlan0 with IPv4 address then as wmaster0 with a the same initial mac but then chained with -00-00-00-00 ... really long address (not IPv6).

EDIT: tried just adding "iface wlan0" and the restart didn't work.

*Reconfiguring network interfaces...
/etc/network/interfaces:3: too few paramters for iface line
ifdown: couldn't read interfaces file "/etc/network/interfaces"
/etc/network/interfaces:3: too few paramters for iface line
ifup: couldn't read interfaces file "/etc/network/interfaces"

Hmm , What seems to be the problem is that after looking at your iwconfig that it is "Not-Associated" .
Try this; Whatever is in italics including the brackets are replaced by your settings

Essid: Basically your Wireless network name ( linksys, home, etc. )

Key: Network Password

sudo /etc/init.d/networking start

sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid <insert essid> key <insert key>
Run ifconfig again and see if you are Associated

If Yes , Then Run

sudo dhclient wlan0

3rr0r
September 16th, 2009, 04:16 AM
I ran

sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid <net_name> key <key>
without the <> of course and I got a

bash: !: event not found

I do have a an exclamantion character at the end of my key...

Try The below steps ; just once more if anything please, on the last step make sure there is one space between the word essid and the actual essid name. Same goes for "KEY"

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode managed
sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid <network name> key <password>

THANKS!

Hmm try this please, and post the result.

lspci -vv

and if you mind me asking why is your network key so long?

Thanks;

3rr0r
September 16th, 2009, 05:07 AM
Its long because I try to be secure (WPA2 + AES) WPA is only as strong as the passwphrase you use.
