I've got a few really old ubuntu machines that i'm struggling to upgrade, and my main problem is that the old repos are all moved. I realize that support for old repositories only lasts so long before it's moved into the old-releases site. What I don't understand is why the main upgrade facility doesn't support an automatic transition to the old-releases repositories once necessary. Can't the current repos forward requests for say, fiest, directly to the old-releases server, rather than failing and forcing the user to manually edit their sources?

Editing source list is not that much trouble, but that is not what I'm trying to say.If you have old (unsupported release) best thing you can do is to download new version and install it.If you don't have separate home partition make one following this (http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome) guide. That way your data/files/settings will be safe. Then install new version of Ubuntu. If you have slow internet you can order live CD from here.
