Hello,

Whats the best Asus eee netbook for Ubuntu Linux that I can get for around $300-$350. What kind of graphic support do most netbooks running Ubuntu have, obviously I don't want it for gaming but I would want some level of 3D (Compiz). Would it be able to have enough power to run Microsoft office 2007 via wine?

I was looking at this one (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4832821&CatId=3987) but I was worried that the integrating graphics would have zero support. That and comes with XP and I am looking for one with heavy Linux support but I was using its hardware as an example. Can a few Asus eee user tell me how well Ubuntu runs on the little netbook?

Any Asus eee users?

To the mods, if I bumped this too quickly let me know. It would appear as though it got buried quickly.

Its got the Intel GMA950 gpu, so it'll be fine.

Check out Newegg link here (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220553) for nearly full specifications.

Edit:
It looks like it may ship with Atheros AR9285 wifi card: if you have problems, directions on getting it up and running are here http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=7744131&postcount=4

Not too long ago I bought a refurb 900a for $165. I upgraded to a faster ssd, but with only 1gb of ram, I can run ubuntu with compiz enabled and still get halfway decent video performance. I'm sure that these newer, more expensive models can do a lot more. My gf's HP mini, for example, runs Mint with compiz enabled just fine.

Also keep in mind that the next round of linux intel gpu drivers will offer much better perforance than those that shipped with jaunty. They are showing up in some distros already so it might be worth it to wait for Karmic to release.

FWIW, crunchbang runs really well on my 900a.

Eee 901 here,

Wifi, cpu scaling and some Fn keys don't work by default in ubuntu, you have to install the array kernel and a few other utilities. The Eeebuntu distro should work out of the box.

However, I use Arch GNU/Linux on it.

A friend of mine purchased an Asus 1005HA model netbook. It's a great machine. Not everything worked out of the box with Remix though. I used info this site to get everything working:

Yeah I seen that after some googling, I think at this point I am going to get that model. However, I am trying to find that model for below $300. Is there a vendor that I can buy that model without the Windows XP license?

I have an Eee 901. I loaded Easy Peasy 1.1 on to mine a few months ago and I love it. All the basic functionality of 8.10 condensed into a nice little package for a small screen. You can check it out at geteasypeasy.com.

Also, if i may be so bold; may I suggest:

It all boils down to your personal preferences.

Also, I had 8.10 running on mine for about four months before easy peasy. It ran great. Didnt have any considerably large problems. Just things I ran into that You would normally. But when I upgraded to 9.04, I lost Skype. So you may want to just use 8.10 if you go for the full fledged OS instead of the trimmed easy peasy. Just food for though.

WOW,

Do you know the difference between that 1000HA and the the $321 1005HA? That price blows my mind.

Yes the interwebs are quite marvellous. That site is awesome. Limited item selection, but if you can find what you want on there, the price will be very low. Im getting a Cowon D2 for less than a hundred there.

I've got a 701 (tiny screen, tiny keyboard, 4GB SSD) running Eeebuntu Jaunty. Everything works great - thanks to the array kernel. It ran a bit slow with just 512MB RAM, but I recently upgraded to 2GB and now it fairly flies!

Some users reckon video playback is choppy on an Eee, but I think it's fine. Video, music and internet stuff (web, usenet) is what I do most on the netbook, but it can do pretty much anything a "proper" computer can.

Pay attention.

Look at http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090826131825AAQQZKU Someone says "It is a fake site... the deals are too good to believe... their customer service number connects you to a weight loss company... that is proof enough for a scam :)"

If I'm reading things correctly, I believe the 1005HA has an N capable wifi chipset, and the 1000HA does not, there may be some other differences, but thats the first thing I noticed.

Vesa will power a Poulsbo device acceptably. The Poulsbo drivers work well only under Ubuntu - not under its derivatives.
