Does anyone remember the UDSF project?

I found this. Anyone heard of it. I did some reading and the project was big in its hay day, and then went away or something. now I see its back in order. What's the deal here?

It was huge back in the day, but it did cause some controversy. I'm glad to have it back :)

Until probably 6 months or so ago, I would accidentally type in doc.gwos.org when I needed to look something up, completely forgetting that it was offline. It was my first stop for any issues I had when it was up. I have high hopes that it will again become what it once was.

Some said that there was no need for it since we had the official wiki, that it split the documentation effort. I always preferred UDSF. It was organized way better, and was based on MediaWiki so it had a lot of functionality the wiki lacked. It wasn't a pain to edit like the official wiki, and search worked better.

Beyond that, there's a saying that too many chefs spoil the stew. A lot of documentation efforts get screwed up on the wiki when you get too many people editing something. That was never a problem at UDSF.

I remember the UDSF project, it had a good leader at the helm, Looking over the site linked, I would say it is a work in progress.

I am not sure if the same team, is involved with the project, but it looks like it is still helmed by the original project leader.

I think if the original team is involved, and with help from some new members, it will make for an exciting new stage in the evolution of the project.

I too really liked the UDSF as it was well organized.

Unfortunately the last place I would ever look for Ubuntu knowledge would be in the Ubuntu wiki, as it (again) unfortunately, in general, really sucks.

Well, I was part of the UDSF (maintaining the NVIDA driver part and games (ofcause)) - Later when UDSF was closed I moved my beloved passion for gaming to http://gwos.org

Yes, I remember you were a very important part of the UDSF, Artificial Intelligence.

I was, for an incredibly brief period also a member of (what is his name's?) the team, by "his" invitation.

Unlike you AI, I contributed very little & if I remember retired as my knowledge was so scant.

I can see his avatar, & from memory, he owned & maintained the servers, had huge knowledge (& I dare say energy too) regarding Linux/Ubuntu.

A great loss when he left this community I thought & still think.

That was probably the start of my relationship with the gaming forum, but initially, I was secretly on Debian, & having a problem with getting the internet working & the networking master, mips, sorted it out for me. :)

Thanks A.I., I kinda thought it was possible that I was applying a little tension here & there, though I really haven't got much of a clue as to why, or what happened.

I'm sure it will all come out in the wash, as we say here.

Ultimately good news regarding the UDSF project, anyway. :)

Hey guys. I just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself and what I am doing. I joined the wonderful community of Ubuntu users back in 2007 and have recently started doing more to get involved over here.

One thing that I have the delight and honor to be running is the UDSF (http://gwos.org/udsf/) Project. One of the reasons I have decided to resurect the project is that the Wiki lacks one main feature needed in a tutorial site. A way to browse through and find things that way. The Wiki is a wonderful program and it is so full of information that it is almost scary. But, finding information on the Wiki is limited to the search box.

Anyway, I know that UDSF (http://gwos.org/udsf/) is smaller then it was but, hopefully with support and a little bit of hard work and dedication it will be able to grow to be a wonderful source of information that can be used by all.

What has been known as the "Ubuntu Wiki" / wiki.ubuntu.com (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/) is now known as the "Community Team Wiki", and has not been used for documentation and help for a long time. Existing documentation pages have been moved to https://help.ubuntu.com/community, which as you'll note is pretty browsing-friendly, and is the recommended place for new community contributed documentation.

When I was a Ubuntu user, the UDSF was my first stop when I was looking for solutions.
