I found this. Anyone heard of it. I did some reading and the project was big in its hay day, and then went away or something. now I see its back in order. What's the deal here?

It was huge back in the day, but it did cause some controversy. I'm glad to have it back :)

Until probably 6 months or so ago, I would accidentally type in doc.gwos.org when I needed to look something up, completely forgetting that it was offline. It was my first stop for any issues I had when it was up. I have high hopes that it will again become what it once was.

For those not in the know:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UDSF

This was written back in 2005, and really not touched. Check it out.

Some said that there was no need for it since we had the official wiki, that it split the documentation effort. I always preferred UDSF. It was organized way better, and was based on MediaWiki so it had a lot of functionality the wiki lacked. It wasn't a pain to edit like the official wiki, and search worked better.

Beyond that, there's a saying that too many chefs spoil the stew. A lot of documentation efforts get screwed up on the wiki when you get too many people editing something. That was never a problem at UDSF.

People used to say more than just that about it.

I remember the UDSF project, it had a good leader at the helm, Looking over the site linked, I would say it is a work in progress.

I am not sure if the same team, is involved with the project, but it looks like it is still helmed by the original project leader.

I think if the original team is involved, and with help from some new members, it will make for an exciting new stage in the evolution of the project.

Oh noes! Someones posts a gwos link and then compiledkernel shows up, this is gonna get ugly :)

After a quick look at the site it seems well written *bookmark*

Who is running the UDSF now?

The same ex-staff member that we haven't seen here for a looong time?

I too really liked the UDSF as it was well organized.

Unfortunately the last place I would ever look for Ubuntu knowledge would be in the Ubuntu wiki, as it (again) unfortunately, in general, really sucks.

Well, I was part of the UDSF (maintaining the NVIDA driver part and games (ofcause)) - Later when UDSF was closed I moved my beloved passion for gaming to http://gwos.org

There are still people from the UDSF around ;)

Yes, I remember you were a very important part of the UDSF, Artificial Intelligence.

I was, for an incredibly brief period also a member of (what is his name's?) the team, by "his" invitation.

Unlike you AI, I contributed very little & if I remember retired as my knowledge was so scant.

I can see his avatar, & from memory, he owned & maintained the servers, had huge knowledge (& I dare say energy too) regarding Linux/Ubuntu.

A great loss when he left this community I thought & still think.

Ah! Got him! The worthy KingBahamut.

Is KingBahamut behind the resurgence of the UDSF?

I'll post this link again, as the reasons that the UDSF existed in the first place have become so much more pronounced since its initial inception:

Who knows ;)

I actually remember the day you joined this forum, you question was regarding Cedega if my memory serve me correctly. You hanged a lot out in the gaming forum.

I've been doing some research on the web, & am becoming more & more curious as to what happened back then?

Where do I go to find out what happened back then? I'm surprised I don't know already!

That was probably the start of my relationship with the gaming forum, but initially, I was secretly on Debian, & having a problem with getting the internet working & the networking master, mips, sorted it out for me. :)

I can't say no more, to respect the involved partners in the case.
But you might get lucky if the involved person(s) comes and comment on your questions, who knows.

So no comments.

Thanks A.I., I kinda thought it was possible that I was applying a little tension here & there, though I really haven't got much of a clue as to why, or what happened.

I'm sure it will all come out in the wash, as we say here.

Ultimately good news regarding the UDSF project, anyway. :)

[Edit:] I'll hold to any reasonable stipulations contained in a PM, that satisfies my curiosity? Wherever it comes from. :)

Hey guys. I just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself and what I am doing. I joined the wonderful community of Ubuntu users back in 2007 and have recently started doing more to get involved over here.

One thing that I have the delight and honor to be running is the UDSF (http://gwos.org/udsf/) Project. One of the reasons I have decided to resurect the project is that the Wiki lacks one main feature needed in a tutorial site. A way to browse through and find things that way. The Wiki is a wonderful program and it is so full of information that it is almost scary. But, finding information on the Wiki is limited to the search box.

Anyway, I know that UDSF (http://gwos.org/udsf/) is smaller then it was but, hopefully with support and a little bit of hard work and dedication it will be able to grow to be a wonderful source of information that can be used by all.

Thank you all for taking time to read this. I am DarkwingDuck on freenode and I can be found in #ubuntu-beginners or #ugn when I am online.

Once again, I am please to bring you a new era and phase of the UDSF (http://gwos.org/udsf/) project.

What has been known as the "Ubuntu Wiki" / wiki.ubuntu.com (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/) is now known as the "Community Team Wiki", and has not been used for documentation and help for a long time. Existing documentation pages have been moved to https://help.ubuntu.com/community, which as you'll note is pretty browsing-friendly, and is the recommended place for new community contributed documentation.

@Handy - Are you sure that this info is hard to find? Try IRC logs and blog history. Com-- excuse me, KingBahamut left plenty of tracks behind.

@Darkwing-Duck: Thanks for taking on the UDSF project, it will be of huge benefit to the Ubuntu community, as they will be able to access the best of these forums in an easy fashion.

When I was a Ubuntu user, the UDSF was my first stop when I was looking for solutions.

Thanks again. :)

Thanks, I've got it quietly sorted now. ;)
