View Full Version : Which of these laptops should I get?

September 14th, 2009, 04:26 PM
I am looking to get a new laptop to run Ubuntu and Windows 7 on. My budget is 500.

Or is there a better laptop that I should be aware of?

Thanks for any help.

I would stay away from HP at all costs. I had one for a year and after getting thrown around by their terrible support, the retailer actually ended up buying it back from me for full price. They were that embarrassed by the handling of the situation.

Also the computer was a huge pile, it was heavy, didn't work right and just plain garbage. Overpriced garbage.

Try looking at the Acer Aspire 6920G, I've had mine for about a year now and LOVE it.

Everything but the fingerprint reader work under Ubuntu!

Lenovo 3000 series.

everything works, the fingerprint reader needs an extra package to be installed, that's it.

I would look into an Acer or Asus. I have found them to be wonderful machines, and I haven't had much trouble with customer service in the past.

The Inspiron 15n from dell with Ubuntu Preinstalled?

September 14th, 2009, 05:27 PM
I think Dell have stopped selling the Inspiron 15 with Ubuntu in the UK. The Inspiron is great except that it gets covered in fingerprints on the front because of the finish.

I was originally hoping for a 64-bit laptop with N Wi-Fi and a 6-cell battery but it seems that computer stores concentrate more on HDD and RAM size not features such as processor and Wi-Fi which matter more to me. :S

Is it just me or is the amount of RAM omitted in these specs ?

Ok, well the Packard Bell has 3GB of RAM.

What would you be using this computer for? That should be a huge factor deciding what computer to buy. Do you need windows at all? If not just order on of System76 laptops. They are awesome overall, and the support couldnt be better.

Seems great, but System 76 is US and Canada only on the site.

I have Dell M1330. I love this little piece of machinery.
The only problem I had though is with video card, which is nvidea. I dont know either dell or nvidea screwed up with the temperatures and the card used to get overheated like crazy, so all I did was install a copper mod.
Ubuntu works out of the box on this machine, including wireless and everything else.
So yeah get Dell
