Hello,
I have problems on an intel 64 bit machine and would like to reinstall the 9.04 system in 32 bits.
Can I do it without formating the home partition?
(I lack disk space to do a backup)
Thank you for your advice.

you can indeed.

beware, of course, that without a backup anything of this nature is very risky. even if it comes down to backing your stuff up onto several CD-Rs, you really should get this done or just leave your system be.

at least back your super important stuff up onto ubuntu one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_One) or a similar "cloud storage" service.

if you are certain you understand the risks and want to try anyways:

select manually partition. set the mountpoint of your /home partition to /home and ensure 'format partition' is unticked.

do not be especially surprised, however, if a slight breeze or a fly landing on your nose results in you losing all of your stuff.

you are welcome.

but i'd still like to emphasize again how horribly at-risk you are placing all of your important files by doing this without a proper backup.

regardless, i hope it all goes well for you! :D
