I can't get a good cd burn for the life of me.
It took me 5 tires to get a good iso file. And 9 discs later I can't one that comes out with the right md5sum on my desktop I have tried Infrarecorder, Isorecorder, and alcohol120%. I have tried it once on my laptop using Infrarecorder. I even set it to burn at 8x once and went to the bathroom and read comics (so I wouldn't bump, jostle, jack, or cross mojinate with it in anyway ). I still get teh same invalid md5sum for all of them 2006c92f10108df93cdf1f4cbc841a92 when it should be cace6ea9dde8dc158174e345aabe3fae. I am brand new to Ubuntu and have look up a fair amount of threads and articles to try and find a solutions, but this has got me completely stumped. Any help would be much appreciated see you guys when i wake up and get some more cd's.

sounds like a probable hardware failure.

the thing about burners is that, unlike some other stuff, it is very possible for it to be broken or 'kind of broken' in some tasks, but work perfectly at other tasks. i've seen optical drives like that myself.

have you tried burning on a buddies computer to rule this possibility out?

No I haven't tried that yet i will give that a shot after 1 or 2 more tries on my laptop when i get back from getting discs and shingles.

Ok i have tried it on 3 different machines now and still no luck (desktop, laptop, and my brothers computer). I even tried burning the 8.04 version a couple times with no success. Also tired clone cd to see if it would work.

Also something i forgot to mention cause it went away after awhile yesterday but came back today. On my desktop which uses xp 64 when i put the cd in that says " exception processing message c0000013 parameters 7c7df5f8 38c079b8 7c7df5f8 7c7df5f8 " and it gives me a few options to cancel, try again, or contiue. After a few clicks it disappears and the cd will auto play. On my laptop it will which is vista 64 it does nothing and when i try to go to my computer and explore the disc it tells me to please insert a disc. Again for awhile last night this went away and it would let me explore the disc after burning.

Have you tried a different brand of CDs? I've had CD/DVD players that were fussy about brands. I usually use TDK, which are cheap and good.

also tried making a bootable usb using unetbootin and i still got the same md5sum number that doesn't match the hash on the web site. Is it suppose to be different from the one on the iso image and the md5 hash on the web site?

I haven't seen anyone suggest you re-download the .iso. If you haven't done that give it a try.

well i dl'd them 5 times to get one where the md5sum matched and i got one of the 9.04 version and the 8.04 version. I have tried them both . I will give it another try tho if ya think it is worth it and is there another page better than ubuntu.com to get them?

ubuntu.com is the official place to get them.

There may be mirrors listed.

You said you got two with the correct md5sum.

What do you mean by you "tried them both"?

Man, that is one weird problem. You've tried everything I can think of. Ubuntu.com is the place to get thee ISOs.

I tried burning 4 or 5 cds of the 8.04 version

Not such a weird problem, really.

It's a huge file. All it takes to screw up the md5sum is for a single bit to be incorrect. Crappy cable connection. Thunderstorm in Des Moines. Neighbor downloading streaming porn videos.

Using a torrent client really is the best way to go to get a clean download of a huge file.

The error message is a bit reminiscent of one I encountered a while back when trying to use Wubi and possibly refers to a known bug. Have a look here:

I've never checked the md5sum (although recommended). I just burn the CD and it works. You can order one from Ship-It, it's better than wasting all those CDs.

ok found a neat little feature that i over looked.

K so i found the cd integrity check ran it on a couple of the disks and it said they are fine. Should i ignore the mismatching md5 sums and just use the disks anyway ?

Well, if the CD error check says they're good - I dunno, I'd probly try installing to a spare HDD or a test PC. Something that wouldn't be a disaster if it didn't work right.

Another thought - one of the downloads that you think is good? Copy it to a thumb drive and take it to a friend's house. Burn the image on their PC.

I've burned dozens of install CD's from a download saved to thumb drive and never had a problem.
