best guess - 10%

Canonical reckons there's approx. 10 million users
Forums have near 1 million members

It`s going to increase due to the link that is displayed during the karmic installation slide show.

If you don`t know what I mean you will when you install karmic.

Considering that only people with problems that they fell the need to ask about in person end up on the forums and there are many many other places where answers can be found, I would guess somewhere around 5-10%.

According to the front page of the forum there are 910,000(ish) members and according to Google there are at least 8,000,000 Ubuntu users.

Much less than 1% of Ubuntu users will actually be active users of this forum.

I would've guessed about 90%. The way I think it, almost all new users would have to come here with their problems. There's not a more comprehensive place to ask for help. I'd say the 10% would be very experienced Linux experts who don't need any help nor have time to help others.

But now that you guys told me the numbers, I guess the percentage is a lot smaller than I'd thought.

I've used Ubuntu for almost a year before i became a member of the forums. And only because i couldn't find the answer i was looking for. i guess most users just read it to look stuff up.
Almost all questions have already been asked and answered. That's why i think the Ubuntu community is great.

I had used Linux years before I used a forum.

I think a lot of people have an account, but do not access the forum..

What do they do when they need help with something?.. Crazy :D...

About 0.5 percent are probably active though..

probably about 10%. 20% max. I have setup up 10 people with ubuntu and there loving it. but not a damn one has a reason to join the forums. if they need help they ask me. and if need be, I surf the forums:). I suspect this is the case a lot of times, rather than search or ask a forum they would rather ask there "tech guy(or girl:D)". besides not all new users know there is an official ubuntu forums.

Logical approximations would give a guess around 0.673%
