I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix with apt-get on top of Ubunty 9.04 Jaunty Server edition as my laptop is so old that it does not support booting from USB Flash drives. I was suprised how easily and smoothly everything went, tho there are few desktop & screen related problems I have not yet been able to solve.
My system:
Sony Vaio VGN-T50B (VGN-T140 in US, VGN-T37 Hong Kong, VGN-T2XP UK, VGN-T50B Japan)
Intel Mobile Celeron 900MHz
Intel Centrino chipset
768MB RAM (System monitor says 741MB ?)
40GB Hard disk
10.6" LCD screen having a native resolution of 1280x768
Solved problems:
- Sound card didnt work. Solution: Install Gnome Alsa Mixer & untick External Amplifier which is enabled by default for this sound hardware. More here: http://kingswood-consulting.co.uk/frank/t-series.html
- When using Destop switcher to switch to standard Gnome desktop the Gnome Panel dissapeared (both upper & lower bars) after reboot. Solution: Install updated version of desktop switcher and follow instruction from here https://bugs.launchpad.net/desktop-switcher/+bug/349519?comments=all
Unsolved problems:
- Screen does not restore after its been suspended. System restores as its possible to for example continue playing mp3 but screen stays powered off, only way I have found to get it back is to reboot
- Mouse cursor is not aligned correctly, it activates desktop objects from left of it. Take a look at screenshot, it activates calculator in picture ! Problem is related to desktop objects only, mouse align with applications (like Firefox) or any dialog boxes seems to be ok.
