On August 25th I posted a thread that my screen resolution was limited to 800 x 600,
this weekend with too much time on my hands, I experimented with various flavours of Ubuntu as follows:-
hardy
Intrepid
Jaunty
Crunchbang
Karmic
All with the same result stuck at 800 x 600, my desktop has a 19" monitor which I use for image editing, so a resolution of 800 x 600 does'nt do me any favours at all.

But when using the Live versions of OpenSUSE and Puppy, they always open in full screen.
therefore it would appear that Ubuntu is the problem??.
I have even taken the DRASTIC step of Installing W.....s, and that runs at fullscreen, hope I have'nt contaminated my machine

As always all help, suggestions and ideas greatly appreciated and welcomed.

Have/do you know how to change the resolution settings? If you've tried to change them, then I'm afraid I can't help you... However, if not, try
System -> Preferences/Administration (I can't remember which, not on Ubuntu at the moment :(, but it should be easy enough to find) -> Display/Screen Resolution.
