so I'm new to this but was having similar problems trying to set up dual-boot (Mint & XP) on two separate HDDs. I did not want to mess up my XP HDD with partitions with Grub or various bootloader complications so I set up my master HDD with Grub/Linux, slave drive with XP, and entered the following into the GRUB boot menu :

___________________________________
title Windows XP
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

I had tried tons of options and that's the one that worked for me - hope it helps!
