Hey guys,

I was wondering, i know most (if not all) here have ubuntu on their netbooks. But i wanted to know if you have the netbook remix installed or just ubuntu desktop? I have included a poll for it.

Thanks. :)

I found after reading around that it was easier to get all of the hardware setup on my 1005ha using UNR, I however after install use the standard gnome desktop not the remix desktop.

I actually use a mixture, as I often use an external keyboard and large monitor. I use maximus and the window picker, but standard Gnome menus since the netbook-launcher looks odd on a large screen. I have maximus set not to maximise by default, only on request (that's a gconf setting).

A lot of people seem to think that Netbook Remix has better hardware support, more speed or fewer bugs than regular Ubuntu. Not so. Netbook Remix is regular Ubuntu, with the Netbook Launcher program running by default so you get a nice "small-screen" interface.

I just use regular Ubuntu on my netbook. You can't run the netbook-launcher and Compiz at the same time, so I'd rather have Compiz effects.

The UNR annoys me.

Ubuntu NBR contains a number of packages that arn't included on the regular Ubuntu disk that make installation and hardware compatability better out of the box compared with standard Ubuntu(from my experiance loading both as live images on my netbook) but the difference is minimal

None of the above. But voted Desktop (which is closest).

My netbook desktop = UNR - maximus - netbook-launcher + XFCE4 + lots of other apps.

I'm using Netbook Remix. I don't use the netbook desktop layout, or Maximus, but it works fine. I've been considering eeebuntu, however.

I don't own one. I really don't understand why one would like to have one either.

My laptop is 2,9kg. A typical netbook has a longer battery and weights a lot less.
It's perfect for travel!
Next year I will surely need one

it's annoying that NBR only works with the intel atom processors. I've got a hp 2133 mini note that uses a via c-7 and it won't let me run NBR.

That is false. NBR does not require an Atom processor; it uses the same i386 kernel as "regular" Ubuntu and should run on the same hardware.

Shadow, where's the option for "Arch" on your poll????

"other"

Ubuntu doesn't recognise my netbook's bluetooth, 3g modem and wifi.

A lot of people seem to think that Netbook Remix has better hardware support, more speed or fewer bugs than regular Ubuntu. Not so. Netbook Remix is regular Ubuntu, with the Netbook Launcher program running by default so you get a nice "small-screen" interface. It's true. There's a lot of misinformation out there.

The Netbook Remix even uses the regular i386 kernel and not the lpia kernel.

I use regular Ubuntu because, small as my netbook is, it's still a computer and not a mobile phone.

My 1005ha has about 6 -8 hours battery life, weighs less than half of my main laptop and allows me to word process and program and browse the internet just as easily. Perfect for my needs at uni.

Works like a charm.

Why?

You can just remove maximus and netbook-launcher, and then add ubuntu-desktop.

Basically same result.

I have an eee pc, 701SD. I was not a fan of UNR, much rather normal ubuntu. The UNR inteface was very slow, hovering over an icon made it bounce like a mac etc. I couldnt see any benifit of UNR for me.

You don't own one. Fair enough.

I'm pleased you are happy in your ignorance, but I fully understand why I own one.

Neither, I have Windows. Because I need Windows for certain things still, like configuring my router properly, since the web interface is beyond me.

Using vanilla Ubuntu

I was using Arch, but wifi support was really annoying me, so came back to my old favorite. soon it will have Windows 7 on it too, as I need it for a few apps that will not run under wine.

I have not really checked. But I will edit this post when I find out. *reboots*

EDIT: 25 seconds. With MySQL, Pure-FTP, GDM, open-ssh and apache daemons starting up.

I'm gunning for "an instant on" netbook -- but I'll take 10 seconds or less. Any insight on this matter?

Well, the daemons that I loaded take some time, so I will comment them out and reboot, I bet it will be about 9 seconds or so.

It's 9 seconds on this 1gb 900HD eeePC netbook.

9 seconds from grub to GDM. And I am running gnome, it takes about 3 seconds to login.

None of the above. I use Crunchbang with Karmic packages (because of better touchpad and powersaving support). Openbox with tint2 absolutely rules on my Eee 901... (and it looks sexy (http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/1166/2009082412511264811024x.png), too (http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/1685/200908241733271024x600s.png)) :guitar:

Arch on an Eee pc 901 here,

10 seconds to terminal login, another 2 seconds to start up awesome-wm (http://awesome.naquadah.org/), not counting the time it takes to login and type "startx". This install is pretty much a practice in how light I can go and still have a usable netbook - I mostly use CLI programs (mplayer, vim, mc, irssi), I've actually only got two programs that require x right now: wicd (wifi connection manager) and uzbl (browser). The entire install took less than a gigabyte of space, which is quite important considering the 901 only has 20GB of storage space.

wicd doesn't require X, have a look at wicd-curses... ;-)

You are of course correct, but I prefer to have a constant indication of my connection status, and a status icon in the corner is more practical than another terminal window on a separate tag.

For instant-on, why not just suspend? It works fine on my Aspire One. There's no need to shut Linux down every day, and netbooks will last many hours in suspend without draining the battery. Just recharge at night (or when you're at your desk)! I hibernate mine at night, and suspend whenever I'm not using it or travelling etc during the day.
