is there an iso for xubuntu around here somewhere that i could download?

nope. download the ubutnu one, do a server install, then apt-get xubuntu-desktop (i think thats what the package is called)

the xubuntu-desktop comes with a bunch of stuff (including openoffice, i think). you may want to see what's in there first. you can always do a server install and get things like xfce4, etc. and add junk as you go, if you don't want everything that's in there.

Is it not planned for Xubuntu to "debut" as a real distro with the Dapper releases? It would seem the trend, as every release has brought a new distro :)

4.10 = Ubuntu
5.04 = Ubuntu + Kubuntu
5.10 = Ubuntu + Kubuntu + Edubuntu
6.04 = Ubuntu + Kubuntu + Edubuntu + Xubuntu

No openoffice, thank goodness. Xubuntu is aimed for low end machines so xubuntu-desktop has abiword..

What about Oubuntu, with Openbox, or Bubuntu, with blackbox? Oh wait! Iubuntu for IceWM users...do you see where this is going...It's like a joke, thats getting old.

the *buntu naming convention, I think, stems more from Ubuntu's single-CD nature than from anything else. You don't hear about KSuSE or GSuSe, or whatever, because they're multi-disk distros.
