I have a fresh install of 8.04 server, 64-bit. No changes have been made to the installation and apt-get is the very first command executed on the server. When I try to do an apt-get update, I get the following errors:

sudo apt-get update

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

I have tried apt-get clear and also pointing to different repositories. Neither has resulted in a change. An installation of Red Hat on this same machine & IP was able to operate normally, so it doesn't appear to be a firewall issue. There is no proxy. Multiple installs produce the same results. I am uncertain where to proceed from here.

I have not found anything in the forums to date that seem to deal with this specific issue. A pointer to another thread would be great if there's already a solution out there.

Are you running apt-cacher by any chance?
