I tried to install jaunty (ubuntu / xubuntu) each of the attempts failed as I would get a termination error. I tried installing my old 5.10v of ubuntu and it was able to install on her clunky pc.

Now she wants to install a flash plug-in and possibly update the browser. Support is no longer available, as the OS is very old.

Advise?

Download jaunty mini.iso and build from the ground up.

that sounds kind of complicated, read that the installation is text based. Is easy in the sense that you don't have to use commands? btw the installed OS on her pc is not jaunty but Hoary Hedgehog 5.10

wojox is suggesting that you replace 5.10 with 9.04. Since 9.04 is designed for current hardware, he's hoping that the "minimal install" he linked to would be a better match your friend's system requirements.
I would recommend your friend upgrade to a supported operating system if they want to run current versions of software (including flash) not to mention to get security upgrades. I would recommend something like Puppy Linux (http://www.puppylinux.org/), which is made with older hardware in mind.

Didn't know linux installers can do that small but anyway I will try each of the downloads and will come back and give a feedback.

Using the text based installer is no harder that using the live CD. Same questions - time zone, user name, ... Based on the Debian installer. IMO its better and just as easy - will often succeed where the live CD installer fails.
