Welcome to ubuntu forums, linux, and ubuntu. :)
First, you will have to shrink vista's space by the size you want to add to ubuntu. To do this:
In Vista, go to start, the control panel. (Or get to the control panel anyway you know how)
Click System and Security.
Under administrative tools click Create and format hard disk partitions. In the window that comes up, right click Vistas partition and then click shrink volume.
Enter the amount of space you want to give ubuntu.
Click shrink.
When it's done, boot ubuntu using your livedCD (hopefully you have one, otherwise you might have to download it from vista and then burn it.)
When it's done booting, go to System->Administration->Partition Editor and post a screenshot.
I'll give you more instructions depending on what the screenshot shows.
