As reported here...
http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Linux-and-Open-Source/Microsoft-Launches-Open-Source-Foundation-431416/?kc=rss
MS decided to release it's own distribution for home users and kept its proprietary products for the business sector.
And in that same effort promised to collaborate & provide more funding for OpenOffice to ensure compatibility with its business products (MS Office)...
Hypothetically speaking, of coarse. I don't think this would happen... but what if that is what they intend to do...
Would you try their distro? I prob would...

shot-in-the-dark guess: a server distribution (Novell based) that works amazingly well when virtualized on top of server versions of Microsoft Windows, and that will be officially available through Microsoft channels for a price.
and is handicapped if not run in a Microsoft-approved VM on top of a Microsoft Operating System.
something similar to VirtualBox OSE, and the proprietary VirtualBox with USB, etc, support.
would the GPLv3 do any good here, as opposed to GPLv2 that Linux currently uses?

See http://blog.internetnews.com/skerner/2009/09/microsoft-launches-open-source.html
From the 'They Did What?!' files:
Microsoft today is spinning up a new 501.c non-profit effort as a forum to support open source community projects. The new effort is called the CodePlex Foundation and it builds on the efforts of Microsoft's Codeplex site.
The timing of this foundation, during the same week in which it was revealed that Microsoft was allegedly trying to unload anti-Linux patent is somewhat curious, don't you think?

Microsoft could make its entire Windows code open source. Fat chance.

Microsoft is not going to admit the Linux kernel is proven and works. Getting rid of the useless Windows registry would be admitting a C: drive isn't needed to make an OS run. I don't see them going over to Unix any time soon.

BTW...
I almost puked when I saw this ad.
Any doubt Novell is owned by Microsoft?

Novell does have SUSE. I doubt we'll see Microsoft make SUSE the basis of the next-generation Windows.

The article is very unclear on how this differs from Codeplex.

anyways,
Novell does have SUSE. I doubt we'll see Microsoft make SUSE the basis of the next-generation Windows.
what if SUSE's server stuff was tightly integrated into Windows Server with a very minimal layer?
a layer, of course, riddled with brand new software patents.
maybe working together with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cygwin or something similar.
If you want to use Linux, you can either use Novell with Microsoft, or we will sue the hell out of you.

See it goes both way.
Oh... and registry is apparently a nifty idea. That's why were are getting our own version in the form of CouchDB (improved and not system critical of course).

mmmmm.... the level of paranoia and baseless accusations in this thread is almost tangible.

baseless, eh?
would you consider Mr. Ballmer's own words a credible base for what you term 'accusations'?

Mister Ballmer is a crazy person. MS doesn't love us but this aren't the 90s where they can flaunt their size to squash the competition.
EU is on their case and isn't happy with them. Now if only we could get the same level of interest in MS operations from the USA...
EDIT: One important thing to know is that MS is a transnational networked entity. What that means is that they have autonomous divisions that don't have to be in agreement with one another all the time. That's why you are seeing Codeplex Foundation on one side and selling of FLOSS related patents to patent trolls on the other.

Mister Ballmer is a crazy person.
correct.
Mutually Assured Destruction does not work when the Soviet Premier is banging his shoe on the table at the UN claiming "We Will Bury You!" with 10,000 nuclear warheads backing him up.
