Hello, Ubuntu Community!

Like every community, community members often have pets. and also have a preference on what pets they prefer to own. This is not a survey, But more of a Question & Answer Thread, with maybe a brief insight as to why you prefer one other the other and maybe even some pictures of your "Best Friend" or "Cuddle Companion" and any other information you would like to share with us!

Myself, I have 2 cats... I enjoy cats more but i also like dogs. another reason why i also prefer cat is because i live in a apartment, and cats are more, lets say... "friendlier" with the neighbors. Dogs can be loud. they bark (yes little rat dogs bark too a lot of the time even more), and that is annoying to apartment goers. you have to take them outside ever couple hours and find a Decent place for them to go "Potty"

(yes some people don't care and let them **** and poop in the most convent place for them, but this is bad, dog poop carries parasites, (yes no matter how clean you think your dog is the poop carries parasites) and then kids and other people are more likely to come in contact with it and become infected)

take them for walks (unless your a horrible dog owner or the dog has joint issues or health issues) and so on, and so on.

So I have cats because they are better for the environment i live, and heck i love the little two rascals!

But if i owned a house with a yard, i would own a dog two.!

A big aaaaaaw! from me. I'm torn, I love dogs as well as cats. Especially I love those labradors, the ones they use as guide dogs for the blind.

Dogs can be ok, and I have a very faithful one. In the town I live most dogs are simply vicious, so I steer clear of them.

I like cats arguably more since they are so funny. Cats all have wildly different personalities too.

I have one cat that we rescued from a bad winter and a very horrible gash on his abdomen. There was a neighbor dog that got loose and was chasing our other cats, and the one adopted cat (bob) actually tackled him, and took him down. He is so gentle, but is a very brute force fighter when threatened. The dog fled, of course. He is a very friendly cat and never hit at us or the other cats (who can be mean to him) once.

cats are my favorite animals. i have two. both were strays and both are good, little boys. i like dogs, too, but not like cats. i think i'd put gorillas and bears before dogs on my list of favorite animals.

those are pretty cute cats, misfit(sp?).

Generally cats, but the current incumbents (2) are not very sociable and keep pushing me towards getting a dog.

Neither, Parrots. Congonese African Grey Parrots in particular, they are truly faithful animals and aren't dumb like cats and dogs.

I like both for their own reasons. I like dogs because they are very excited to see you even if you just went to the bathroom, and I like cats because they could usually care less if you are there or not. Cats are much easier to take care of and "train" then dogs are (just drop it in the litter box once). But dogs are great also, because it would be hard to train a cat to get you a beer from the fridge, if not impossible. I have had cats most of my adult life, simply because of my military schedule, I often do not have time for a dog. Sadly, right now, I don't have either.

Having looked after both cats and dogs, I prefer cats. Like someone else said, I find that dogs can be high maintenance.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGjIIp shows some we've had. The mother was left behind by a neighbour when they moved, and the fluffy little one (which had one blue eye and "regular" colour and had ears prone to sunburn) took off one day after being chased by some dogs never to be seen by us again.

A cat is a pet but a dog can be a friend or companion.

if you make it a poll, make sure you add a neither option. I'd be more than happy to be w/o any animals. Mostly, all they do is add to my daily workload. One more mouth to feed, one more mess maker to clean up after. Shedding, pooping, eating, digging, pooping, you name it...

Typically cats that have two different color eyes also are deaf in the ear that has the odd color eye... same with dogs also

The coolest cats breed ever... http://www.savannahcatbreed.com/ really they are more like dogs...

some people are like yeah right... yeah "okay" but seriously... lets say you have a cat, and a dog already, and then you get a Savannah. the Savannah will actually get along with the dog better, people ask why, and their is a answer to this, dogs are more Intelligent, and the Savannah relates to them better... these cats will play fetch. (what did i say ?) YES they will play fetch... they actually come when they are called (its still a cat so, if it dont feel like it, i wont but the majority of the time if they are not busy, or sleeping they will) They love water, so if your taking a shower or bath, close the door. or washing your hand or doing the dishes ect... ect... (could be a handful let me tell you...) and also another cool feather of them is, THEY ARE BIG, usuall 20lbs is "NORMAL" but they are long and lengthy, so they look like 30 - 40 LBS, and they DO NOT MEOW, nope no meowing... they "Chirp" like a mountain lion "Chirps" or a cougar... and when they Purr... OMG do they Purr, you talking like BABY COULD YOU STOP PETTING THE CAT!!!! IM TRYING TO WATCH T.V.!!!!! but this could be a problem, because your wife/girl/whatever has a 20LBS vibrator sitting on her lap LOL!

but they are expensive... if you like cats, visit this site... http://www.savannahcatbreed.com/

if you LOVE cats, do not visit this site untill you have saved at least $5,000 dollars (american currency, but they will export to other countries)

On Czech national TV about 4 months ago they had a 4 minute news broadcast about which was smarter, cats or dogs.
They asked many scientists, specialists, pet owners, and random members of the public, and everyone decided it depended on the individual animal. Very nice.

Dogs leave a funny smell on your hands.

Are you sure? Scientist's have dealt in a great amount of time and energy in finding out more about animals in how they adapt, evolve, breed, communicate, can they see color ? are they color blind ? the list goes on and on and on. and one of those questions, result in huge amount of time and energy in studies, that question brain size, activity, problem solving abilities ect... and they even now are able to figure, dolphins and pigs are among the smartest animals in the animal kingdom...

i find it hard to believe, that a f#@&ing goldfish can be smarter that Lassie dude... (im not trying to be rude if im coming off in a manner...)
but these Czech guys need to reevaluate their broadcast and possible look for other sources, I can think of a good place to start... Discovery Channel...

Now if i misunderstood and your just talking about Dogs and Cats... I would still call B.S. Other Discovery Channel throwback... but you can watch some of the shows on Animal Planet like Dogs 101, and Cat 101... and some of these things these dogs are doing... and cats... yeah their is a russian dude out their who can train cats to do some simple tasks like jump. jump higher. jump higher and land on a platform... ect... but their is this one show on Amazing Animals, and forreal, their was a dog this guy trained, and he had over 100 objects, and this guy would just call a single object, and the dog would run around untill he found this item and bring it back to his owner... now let me see a cat do that... then i may believe you. cats have a brain the size of a marble, a dog has a brain about the size of a orange...(a little bigger depending on the dog)...

Yup they were just talking Dogs and Cats.

I don't think how easily animals can be trained has much relevance. The average dog is more easily motivated than the average cat. I mean would you sit in a room with someone saying.. Find the bannana.. go on.. find the banana.. go on.. No.. you'd say go find your own ******* "banana." Which is what the cat does.

A blue whale has a brain about 14 times the size of ours and a shrew has the highest EQ (Encephalization Quotient) in the whole animal kingdom.

I can't speak for anyone else but I'm pretty sure I'm smarter than a blue whale and a shrew.

http://www.ted.com/talks/joshua_klein_on_the_intelligence_of_crows.html

Also there's a chimp that's learned 4000 words (passively) A human adult takes 3 to 10 years to learn that number of words in a second language, usually 4, if they study. (I'm an English Teacher)
So we can assume chimps "natural language" has at least 4000 words.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanzi

Animals are a hell of a lot smarter than we give them credit for, if you don't need language skills you don't develop them, that's not to say you're not intelligent, if you don't need to recognize a banana in a room full of toys you're not going to do that either.

Dogs and Cats both fail the "mirror test of self awareness" which is the most ridiculous thing ever invented, as they base their sense of recognition on smell more than sight.

This is an example of how we apply our stupid rules to animals and judge their intelligence by what's important in our world, but they are equally intelligent to us, they just know different stuff and different types of stuff.

M!SF!TS
September 11th, 2009, 05:32 AM
You have a valid point, and im not doubting your more intelligent then a shrew. but the issue im having with this conversation is this your contradicting your self, at one point in this conversation you say:

I can't speak for anyone else but I'm pretty sure I'm smarter than a blue whale and a shrew.

and in another point in the conversation you say this:

This is an example of how we apply our stupid rules to animals and judge their intelligence by what's important in our world, but they are equally intelligent to us, they just know different stuff and different types of stuff.

But check it out your right about this to, chimps and every other animal have not developed the FOXP2 gene in their genome, (the FOXP2 gene is one of the main and most required genes needed for the ability to use language)

but when it comes down to animal intelligence, you can not pick singular animals for one, yeah you might compare a brain dead dog to the smartest cat in the world and the cat is more likely smarter. But as the animal species in a whole, what one is more intelligent.

im not one to give the right answer you would need a scientist to do this and come to a conclusion. and in "OUR HUMAN WORLD" we perceive intelligence as we perceive it and that is THE standard.

Intelligent life is not Bacteria. so what is Intelligent life ?

Definition.

Intelligence : Noun

* Capacity for learning, reasoning, understanding and similar forms of mental activity.
* "The faculty of understanding"

now contrary to what i just posted, scientist, being scientist, don't even know what Intelligent life is... (sounds weird huh? lol) they have not come to a conclusion what grants intelligence... they do what scientists do and "talk about it" until they can all come to a "standard" and agree on it... like politicians...

but im sure it has to do with a self state of consciousness. so in "our world" in what we know as intelligent would be... My definition

*See Definition Above...

can we agree...

now just say this...

Do you like cats or Dogs better ? because after all that would be the Intelligent thing to post... on a Post named Cats or Dogs ?

Oh yeah i forgot to mention, im not doubting you opinions, but im not going to believe them as a fact, when i got my own opinion... and im not going to believe or develop or change my opinion because a t.v. program in Czech Broadcasts are opinionated and bias, i dont believe everything i hear on American or German broadcasts or any broadcast for that matter... i been deployed to iraq 3 times now as a infantryman, and have been in battles and conflicts with embedded reporters, and every journalist tells a story, and that story is how they see it and precieve it with the information and research they have gathered, and it is always different then our story of what is going (our story meaning me, my buddies, my soldiers, and my superiors) because the information we gathers and is reported down to us is different then what the reporters research... so they tell it how they see it, and then alot of reporters storys are corrupted and turned bias depending on what the news station motive is... cut spliced and unseen footage and notes.

basically, im not going to believe that broadcast from some Czech new station or program and the "answer to intelligence in dogs and cats"

so what is it, you like dogs or cats ?

I had a cat like that many years ago, and my parents have one now. Mine always liked to be held and have her belly scratched. She would also fetch and insisted on going with me when I went hunting. My parent's cat wags her tail when she is being petted. Not thrashed, actually wagged.

Strangely enough, they were both Calicoes.

Its actually a really cool cat... its more (im affraid to say this some one might disagree... but i'll say it anyways... because thats what the experts say) "Intelligent" then you average house cat, intelligence more like a dog, so much it will even play fetch with you!!!

http://www.savannahcatbreed.com/

check it out and do some research if you fancy it... they are Extremely hyper active cats so if you don't like that then stay away from this breed of cat... but personally thats one of the reasons i like cat's their intuitiveness LOL if thats what you call it... LOL

their is a video on youtube with a Savannah playing fetch with its owner... if you wanted to look that up...

they have a hefty price tag due to the licensing for breeders to own a African Serval (the wild gene they tap to produce the Savannah) and due to gestation periods of the Serval and domestic cat, and the chromosomes, and the difficulty of just breeding the two... so they usual cost between 1,500 USD and 20,000 USD, (the average price is 3-7,000 USD) pretty expensive but a nice cat... especially if you have money

Calicoes, or three color cats, here is a fact you may not know... they are almost ALWAYS female... im not sure. but my wife says it is because cats can have different father from the same litter. when they are in heat, more that one cat may impregnate the cat in heat, how this implies three color cats are almost always female is beyond me, that is if my wife even knows what she is talking about...
