Sounds cool indeed!:) But it'll be a lot of organisation and atm Ubuntu is not really in need of more publicity in my opinion. The Ubuntu community should better keep the resources and wait 'till the "Ubuntu-hype" is over its top, though I'm no marketing strategist :P

firefox succeded with the spreadfirefox campaign because it was just another program that people ran over windows. It didn't break their computers.

Ubuntu, on the other hand, *does* "break" machines. A full OS install is beyond the reach of 90 percent of users, no matter how easy it is.

we should come up with an ubuntu jingle.

The Doors - Break On Through (To The Other Side)

You know the day destroys the night
Night divides the day
Tried to run
Tried to hide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side, yeah

We chased our pleasures here
Dug our treasures there
But can you still recall
The time we cried
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side

Yeah!
C’mon, yeah

Everybody loves my baby
Everybody loves my baby
She get
She get
She get
She get high

I found an island in your arms
Country in your eyes
Arms that chain us
Eyes that lie
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through, oww!
Oh, yeah!

Made the scene
Week to week
Day to day
Hour to hour
The gate is straight
Deep and wide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through
Break on through
Break on through
Break on through
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

ubuntu, the debian based linux
has a very silly name
but if you ever used it
you would say it sure weren't lame

all of the other distros
used to laugh and thumb their nose
"who would give up their windows,
just to have those awful woes?"

then one busy working day
the admin came to say
ubuntu with your code so tight
won't you save my *** tonight?

then all the hackers loved it
as they shouted out with glee ("WITH GLEE")
ubuntu the debian based linux
you'll go down in history

Is your windows keeping you from seeing the world?

PENGUIN POWER TO THE RESCUE!!!

Kick out the windows!

Ubuntu, it's not just for computers... it's for everyone...

Or "install ubuntu, or Bill Gates will own the world"

It's a really good idea but the problem is that a newspaper ad like firefox in the NY-Times cost about 250.000 dollar.
How do you want to collect the money?

As I mentioned in an other post before making commercial ads for Ubuntu isn't the best thing to do at the moment. It sounds like Ubuntu would really benefit from the attention but in my opinion things will be ruined very quickly.

Posting commercial ads means Ubuntu has to come out with an point or statement. Know we all know (mark the 'we all know' part) that Linux is a much better OS than Windows when you compare those two with points as:

1. Architecture.
2. Support.
3. (Open Source) Development.
4. Customizing abilities.
5. Possibilities.
6. Costs.
7. And a lot more.

But 'John Doe' people who are jacked into the Matrix will expect 'Heaven' from Ubuntu. There are no costs, I'll get free support for every n00bish question I have and etc. But very soon these users will get confused and blurred. They will start missing the 'ease' (yeah right) of Windows, the interface of the OS and applications and the possibilities (with which they have no problem to crack but under Linux they can't setup :S)

As soon as we pass this milestone the 'John Doe' people will start hating Linux, and dislike Ubuntu for not fullfilling there mirrages. Critics just love these scenario's and they will even do more in order to get noticed and bring down everything in order to be acknowledged.

Now there are more important reasons why not to do such ads now but I just don't have enough intelligence to come up with anymore points. :)

I think the best thing for Ubuntu would be proceeding with it's current course and let reviewers and authors write who have taken the trouble to install and use Ubuntu from an objective point of view.

Don't worry, the Goobuntu rumors were enough marketing to keep Ubuntu center-stage for a while.

LUGradio (http://www.lugradio.org/) listeners will probably have heard this ubuntu jingle (http://blog.adamsweet.org/?p=42).

I'm with Derek Djons on this.

Microsoft doesn't advertise Windows in the hopes that someone will download an XP .ISO, do a checksum on it, burn it as a disk image, and then install it on a non-native PC (possibly in a dual boot with the native operating system), track down all the drivers and codecs, and then post to forums to figure out what went wrong when something does go wrong.

No. They advertise XP in the hopes you'll buy an XP disk and upgrade from Windows 98 or Windows 2000 to XP on an already Windows-native computer. Or they hope you'll buy a Dell or HP that already comes with XP preloaded.

Until the average computer user can walk into a store or easily find online Ubuntu-preloaded computers from reputable sellers, there's no point in advertising Ubuntu.

It took me a while to find system76, emperorlinux, and koobox; and I don't know that regular computer users would trust those vendors per se. And the Wal-Mart Linspire computers were dogs (128 MB of RAM or 256 MB... sometimes missing a hard drive?).

Dun you think someone taking the very first step is needed?
why not having a proper campaign with guides and every thing to get users started...
maybe we can also have PC shops to help users to install and configure Ubuntu on their system...
