Well this is interesting. A few months ago, I had installed KDE and XFCE. Since my gnome session disappeared, I have been using XFCE. It works fine, but I still prefer GNOME. It had just happened today. Does anyone know a way to restore GNOME to GDM?

First, when you log in, check your session options to see if gnome is in there.

Next, I would make sure that the "ubuntu-desktop" package is installed (in synaptic), since I believe it lists the gnome/GDM ones as dependenies.

Did both. And I know I have GNOME installed.

Is it using the KDE login screen or the gnome one?

If you reconfigure/reinstall either the KDM or GDM packages, it will let you choose which one you want to use as your login screen/default environment.

It's GDM. I know this from screwing with a previous installation.
