Is there a simple way to list all the applications that I have installed, above the default Ubuntu installation? It is getting to that time that I might upgrade to a later version of Ubuntu but I can't remember all the applications and packages I have installed from Synaptic or from downloaded deb files over the past couple of years.

There's some info here...

I haven't tried it though...

This would make a really popular app if it existed. Something that allowed people to get a list of all installed applications after initial system installation, and to export that list to other computers at any time, using it as input to synaptic.

So if you want to make a fresh install, you could have all your popular applications installed in minutes afterwards.

Crazy, this is exactly what I wanted above. So it already exists...

I will use this for my Karmic re-install. Page bookmarked. Thank you.

Those are great solutions, thanks very much. I see that Synaptic and dpkg produce apparently different output, but it is simply that dpkg output is sorted and uses a variable number of tabs to space the file more aesthetically.

Now for the robocode, Gimp brushes etc that are installed by hand...
