View Full Version : [ubuntu] No auto gdm?

Probably a newbie question, but I was wondering if I could keep gdm from starting automatically on boot, without uninstalling it? Basically I want to be dropped into the standard shell that you get when you switch to another console when I start up, and if I need to use gdm, I'll start it from there.

I want this because I figure it'll be a lot faster, and all I really use my computer for most of the time is emacs and music, both of which are freely accessible in the console...

I'm not sure if I'm putting this in the right forum, but I couldn't find a better one. I imagine the "no desktop environment" forum would be a little dead...
