I burned Ubuntu onto a cd, put it into my Vista laptop, then restarted my computer when prompted. The screen came on with my options: Install, demo, dual boot, etc. I want to get rid of Vista and have Ubuntu only, no Vista. I chose install, and the bar has been loading back and forth for 4-5 hours now. I thought because it's an entirely new OS that it might take awhile. However, I became doubtful after the fifth hour. Can someone please tell me if this long loading time is normal or there is something wrong, etc, and please tell me anything else that I would need to know? BTW, I am new to Linux.

Thanks
- Alex.

What are your hardware specs? Did you run 'Check CD for defects'?

That long of a load time is not normal.

Any tips? Ideas? How long does it usually take?

Usually that bar would take less than a minute to load. The whole install ... about 40 minutes for me.

Some checks for you:

1. MD5 (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM)
2. Check CD for defects (one of the options when you boot into the liveCD)

Some other install options :

1. F4 and try the safe graphics mode
2. Download, burn and try the alternate install.

Suggest you do the checks first. Also, did you check the minimum system requirements as well as compatibility?

Good luck.

First things first. Did you back up any data you don't want to lose to an external disk?

After downloading the Ubuntu iso did you MD5SUM (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM)? The hashes must match exactly or the iso is corrupted.

Did you burn the iso as an image at a slow speed (4x-8x). If your burning software will not allow you to choose burn speed see here for Infrarecorder (http://infrarecorder.org/).

Boot the Live CD and choose check CD for defects. If it passes install Ubuntu.

At the prepare disk space screen choose Use entire disk. See pic below.

P.S. if you have a recovery partition did you make a Botable set of CDs/DVDs to restore your machine back to factory image if need be. Or make a backup image of the recovery partition. You don't want Vista now, but you will save yourself some trouble later should you need to restore the factory image at a later time.

I'm going to download Ubuntu, burn it, then try installing and everything else over again. The version of Ubuntu I was trying to use was 8.10, which is old, right? I'm not sure if that might have to do with the repetitive loading. Oh, and when I try to check for cd defects, the same loading thing occurs. It never gets past that orange bar. And after a few seconds, that bar slows down, almost stationary. Thanks for the help though, guys. Keep me posted, and try to tell me anything else that could assist.

Alex,

Is this a double-post? What happened after you downloaded the newer version?

If double post, you can ask a mod to merge this with your other thread.

It would help if you would post your hardware specs.

In lieu of running 'Check cd for defects,' you can also check disc integrity with md5sum. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
