I am currently running Ubuntu 9.04 with the configuration mentioned in my signature and I don't have any major problems except for the instability of xserver for intel which is a known issue in Jaunty.

The RAM requirement does increase with every major release and I was thinking if I have to downgrade my system to Xubuntu to have a smooth run.

What do you guys suggest?

i think installing xfce to your existing installation would be better, in case you need to switch back again. but, in your specs, your desktop would be snappier on xfce desktop. =)

Is there anyway by which I can run a benchmarking software to check if my system configuration is suitable for the current Ubuntu release?
