I used to have an older version of Ubuntu installed and had the effects working fine. I mean the animations like the paper plain or fire. I have upgraded to 9.04 and now for the life of me I cant remember how to get them working.
I right clicked desktop and chose Extra in the effects tab & I have animations ticked in the compiz settings. What am I not doing?? Cheers

alt+f2 and run 'compiz --replace'... let us know what happens. to undo that, run 'metacity --replace'.

if that does not work, lets look at the driver you are using:

system -> administration -> hardware drivers

do you have proprietary hardware drivers installed & running? if so, which? and which are listed? perhaps try a different one?
