I am new to Ubuntu and am attempting to install a theme that I found online.
I downloaded a .tar file and tried to install it with the System>Preferences>Appearance tool, but when I looked at my desktop (where I saved the file) with the program, it doesnt display the folder.
I changed the extension of the folder to .tar.gz and I can now see it in the Appearance tool, but whenever I try to install it, it just opens the folder.

Sorry if this is a noob-ish quesiton, but I am lost.

Sometimes the compressed file also contains the theme for Emerald or other extra files. Extract the content and drag the apropriate folder to the appearance window. Try a folder with GTK on its name. It's a good start, I guess.
