Hi,

A non-technical question.

Is there really no restriction at all on redistributing Ubuntu ? For instance, if I wanted to load Ubuntu on a laptop and then sell the laptop, would that be breaking any rules? Or are there bits you can use and bits you can't use? If so, which? And can I get a CD which just contains or installs the allowable bits?

You can actually legally sell Ubuntu by downloading the iso and transferring it to CDs. The GNU regulations allow a price to be placed on free open source software for the cost of the media.

by distributing ubuntu you have to follow the GPL (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html). (there are no restrictions on the use of GPL software, only on redistribution).

you should really make sure you have read and understood the licence, but in this case it seems like you would have to go out of your way to violate it.

i think you would have to provide a copy of the licencing terms. the GPL is included with ubuntu

you would also need to provide copies of the source code, if requested.

have you checked out the OEM install? it lets you set up an ubuntu system and test it, and then when the buyer recieves it they only need to put in things like a user name and password.

i think its a good thing that you are doing this. i hope you get lots of customers :-)
