whats trying to play lots of videos?

Not sure if this the right forum but..

I'm running jaunty with gnome no compiz, periodically something trys to launch heaps of instances what ever my default multimedia application is set to. I literally used to have 25ish copies of vlc firing up at once -which would pretty much kill gnome - till i set my default to xyz. Now i get 25 error dialogs 'unknown process xyz' or something like that.

Any clues? Any way i can find what process is trying to launch another?

are the applications seemingly random, or is it usually a few specific applications?

it might just be a bad install of whatever application(s) you're running. try a remove --purge then a reinstall?
