Hi, I purchased Ubuntu User magazine to get the boot disc, and thought I'd try to test Ubuntu before doing a full install. When I do so, the Night-Rider-esque loading page comes up, followed by a black screen with the following message:

init: Unable to execute "/bin/sh" for rcS: Input/output error
init: rcS main process (1776) terminated with status 255
init: Unable to execute "/bin/sh" for rc-default: Input/output error
init: rc-default main process (1777) terminated with status 255

I am a complete novice at this, can anyone advise if there is something I should do first, or if my system is not compatible.

Thanks

Your computer specs will be helpful.

Try downloading the official Ubuntu iso and burning as an image to CD-R. Get the iso here (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download).

see here (https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/switching/installing-burning.html) for using InfraRecorder to burn the iso as an image to CD-R.
