No desktop iterface

Hi everyone,

I am a first-time user of Ubuntu, just installed v8.04.1 and I am presented ith a black screen nd a login. It logs me in but doesn't give me a desktop interface. What do I do pls?

Very strange.
What is your version : Ubuntu (with Gnome as desktop environnement), Kubuntu (with KDE) or Xubuntu (with xfce). If it is one of these, you should start with the corresponding desktop.
However, if you have installed Ubuntu server, i think it comes without a desktop environnement.

To be sure, try to launch the desktop with the command:
startx (after login and password of course).

Please let me know if it works.
