Just curious. I am compiling my own linux kernel and initrd from scratch. How long will this take...... as it's been about 45 minutes.

I takes over nine thousa... no, wait.

I've never compiled a Linux kernel, but the BSD kernels I've seen compiled way back when took about 5 hours. A quick look via Google suggests that you can compile a kernel as fast as 7 seconds to as long as an hour and a half. The variables are many and varied.

It completely depends on the size of the kernel and the speed of the computer you're compiling on.

Probably not more than 2 hours I would think, on any computer built in the last few years.

But in the grand old days of the Centauri Republic, ten thousand Narn would compile ten thousand kernels at our slightest whim.

On my system it takes at around 45mins. I normally can download a new kernel and have it up and running in a hour. But you can see what hardware I have running on my sig tho..
